About this assignment

I am looking for someone, or probably a couple - as I live in a small rural hamlet -who is caring, reliable, and self sufficient to care for my home and animals from 1st to 10th October 2025.

What responsibilities are required of the house sitter

The priority is caring for and feeding the family menagerie: Asti a very well behaved Border collie cross flat-coat retriever, Frank an elderly, distinguished miniature dachshund two VERY affectionate cats, Kipper and Juno, the four pygmy goats, and (currently) 7 hens.
Asti needs walking once a day, Frank is happy to potter in the garden, and both he and Frank and the cats need love and feeding twice a day. The goats need feeding in the morning and evening and the hens need to be let out into their pen in the morning and fed and shut in at dusk.
There is limited housework required, the house - an old stone farmhouse - needs to be kept clean and tidy - but I'm not obsessive about cleanliness!!

What are the good features of the property and location

The house is large and welcoming with a roaring woodburner in the farmhouse kitchen. I have lovely neighbours who will help if you have any problems (they have been looking after my animals for years - so understand exactly what's involved)!! There is a small cafe/bar about 2kms walk from the house open Thurs - Sun. We are surrounded by small villages each with their local restaurant, market and wine tasting. We are 40 mins drive from the city of Cahors with plenty to visit.
We have broadband internet.

What does the house sitter need to consider before applying for this assignment

We are in the countryside so you will need a car - there is plenty of space to park under cover. The house is restored and cosy, but old and creaky too!

Can I bring my own pets?

Yes
Restrictions: Well behaved pets are always welcome.

Mas Sarrat - Lot

This was my first time house sitting and I wasn't disappointed. I was looking for somewhere in rural France with a few animals and that would allow me to bring my own dog. Fiona's place was perfect: a large farmhouse property with a dog, 2 cats, 4 goats and 9 hens. My whippet, Loki, got on wonderfully with Fiona's retriever, Asti. He was such fun - it was like having a local companion to shepherd us to do the right thing. Walks each morning and afternoon were a pleasure, either from the house or a short drive to one of the other villages. Cats, goats and hens were very easy to look after with the routine taking no more than 30 minutes each day. I found a car essential. I had my own, but I also borrowed Fiona's to whizz around the local roads pretending to be a local! It is a quiet life out of season in rural Lot, but lovely scenery and plenty of sights to visit within 15-40 minutes drive: Les Arques, Gourdon, Prayssac, Cahors, vineyards, etc. Fiona is great. She couldn't have been more helpful and available on WhatsApp if I had any questions. A stalwart of the local community, Fiona took the time to introduce me to everyone via the local association walk - 15 minutes after Loki and I arrived! I would recommend this house sit to anyone.

Amazing community

It was lovely to house sit Fiona's farm! I arrived a day early to learn my way around and Fiona really made that happen with a welcome party. I got to meet all the neighbors and instantly felt like part of the community. The goats were sweet and easy to care for. Austi the dog got along great with my dog as we went on walks in the surrounding area each day. Austi is a very very good, loving dog! All the animals (cats, chickens, goats & dogs) were easy and relaxed. I fell in love with the area as there are many beautiful towns near by and great farmers markets to get local food from. I had a wonderful time & cant wait to come back and visit everyone!

Lovely countryside house/pet sit

What fun we had caring for Fiona's menagerie of animals. Goats, chickens, rabbits, a guinea pig, cats and the wonderful Asti (dog with soulful eyes). The highlight of our days was taking Asti and his best friend Logan for long walks through the wooded countryside, followed by drinking tea by a cozy fire. The area was extremely quiet and beautiful. The neighbors were very friendly and there to help us in any way should we need it. Fiona was a very conscientious host and made us feel right at home, even picking us up and dropping us at the train station. As well as allowing us the use of a car while she was away. She even provided a delicious home cooked vegetarian lasagna when we arrived. Highly recommended!

A Fairy Tale Setting

Gary and I watched Fiona's home and animals for three weeks. We arrived two days early to learn how to take care of her dogs, cats, goats, guinea pigs, rabbit and chickens. She was very thorough and even left us written instructions. The house is in a lovely rural setting -- very remote French country side and very beautiful. Several neighbors stopped in to say hello and to offer their help. You really need a car for this assignment. Fiona stayed in touch with us throughout. She made us dinner on the day that we arrived and made us feel welcome. She even set up a Christmas tree for us!
