We are looking for house sitters from 20 November- around 20 December 2019. A self sufficient, responsible, practical and caring couple or person with love of the outdoors and nature would be ideal to enjoy our organic fig and almond farm. This is a tranquil, remote retreat in the mountains of southern Spain 4.5km up a steep track, so you will be happy with your own company and being surrounded by nature and fabulous landscape. You may be early retired or able to work remotely, will relish space and seclusion. Ideally, you’d have experience of living off grid with solar energy, gas bottles etc, or else be practically minded and willing to learn. Willingness to drive on steep mountain tracks is an essential, and enjoyment of gardening a bonus.
Own pets ( cat friendly) welcome, but note the farm is unfenced.
Feeding three cats and chickens and keeping the house and vegetables ticking over are the main responsibilities.
Keeping the vegetable plots alive through regular watering or monitoring and cleaning the irrigation systems and ideally a bit of weeding.
Dealing with occasional maintenance, such as a burst pipe and monitoring the solar electric system; the generator could be needed to support the solar so familiarity with solar/generators is a plus but not essential.
We will also appreciate the house being kept tidy and safe, but we are not precious about the farmhouse and are happy for sitters to treat it as their own.
It's a very tranquil and beautiful location surrounded by wildlife and a simple lifestyle. Birdsong, peace and quiet and starry skies without light pollution. In spring we have 8 varieties of orchids around our organic farm. You should enjoy some brilliant bird watching and possibly sightings of eagles overflying the house.
It’s an inspiring place to paint, draw or practice yoga outside or go walking and running with views of the Sierra Nevada across the Alpujarras.
The house is a secluded renovated farmhouse at 1000m altitude and 4.5km up a track (part paved, part dirt) surrounded by wonderful hillsides and fabulous views to the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The house has three bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and indoor and outdoor living spaces, including hammocks and a plunge pool in summer. We have solar electricity, solar hot water, log burners, our own spring water and a productive vegetable plot and fruit trees.
You would have use of our satellite internet, although we have a download/upload limit of 10GB a month, it's a reliable connection for email, browsing, Skype, but does not have the capacity for streaming or download of films etc. If you're relying on this, please discuss your usage with us first. We also have a good 4G mobile signal.
It's about 20 minutes drive to our nearest village with mini-market, bakery, bank, farmacy and bars etc and about 40 minutes to larger towns with a range of shops; the nearest beach is about 50 minutes down hairpin bends to the coast.
The Alpujarras is a relatively unspoilt area of rural Spain, set between the Mediterranean sea and the Sierra Nevada mountains near Granada. The architecture, culture and agricultue are unique and offer great opportunities for lovers of the outdoors for walking and cycling; photographers writers and artists will all find it an inspiring location to experience rural Spain.
The access to the farm is a steep, narrow mountain track with hairpin bends, part dirt, part surfced, and in places feels exposed. The farm and land around the house is steep so a reasonable level of fitness is required to enjoy life here. You need to enjoy life outdoors to get the best from life here.
As we are in the mountains the weather can be extreme: high winds, heavy rains in winter and hot in summer.
We have a mixture of Spanish and English neighbours nearby, a little Spanish or a willingness to try would be helpful in the local villages, but not essential.
It’s about 20 minutes drive to the nearest shop/bar/village so it can be quite a lonely existence- you need to enjoy remote tranquil places, but almost all our house sitters have found it an enchanting place.
I house sat for Cath and Bob for 6 weeks. It's a gem of a place with fantastic vistas. I was a novice with the solar power system but it presented no problems while I was there. The off grid, living off the land lifestyle is fantastic way to live. It was a comfortable stay. The chooks and cats were a breeze to look after and there was an abundance of veges and fruit to eat and preserve. Cath and Bob are brilliant people to house sit for.
Cath and Bob are a lovely couple, respectful of people, animals, the land they own and the country they chose to live in. Their place reflects their attitude of respect and peace. It would suit someone who is comfortable with their own company, but it's sorrounded by such magic that it becomes hard to leave it. I would highly recommend both them and the place. Thanks!
We can't think of enough adjectives to describe this mountain retreat. Yes, living is basic but more than adequate as long as your are tuned into the rhythms of nature. There are not many locations in the world that are as awesome (in the true sense of the word) as this. Come prepared to live at one with nature and apply a few practical skills and you won't want to leave. There are very few places in the world that a location like this can be found. We live on a narrowboat in England and are used to managing solar and energy generation so are at home in such an environment.
